Landowners - how to help your birds

Patchwork of arable and livestock fields

The Bird Conservation Targeting Project produces maps, which can help you to help the birds on your land. You can get funding through government grant schemes, which help pay for conservation management to boost the populations of birds on your land. The Bird Conservation Targeting Project lets you know which birds are already near your land, and which conservation measures will benefit these species.

On most farms, management can be undertaken to benefit certain species. However, the targeting maps help you find out which scarce species you could also benefit through management. Some species have declined by more than 70% in the past 30 years, so if these birds are still breeding near your land, your help could be their life-line. You can find all the information you need by following the link on this page to view targeting maps and management advice. Please note that targeting maps for Scotland will not be available until early 2009.

In England, the farmland bird data has also been incorporated into interactive maps on the Nature on the Map website. This website allows you to zoom in to your area to see which birds present are present. To use the interactive maps, click on the link to Nature on the Map, then click on ‘Agri-environment Targeting’ and look at the ‘Targeting and Planning Map’

Once you have used the target maps to see which bird species are nearby and how to help them, you can follow the links on the right-hand side of this page to find out about the government grant schemes available in your country.
