Thames Gateway

Stretching east along both banks of the River Thames, from the City of London out to Southend and the Isle of Sheppey, the Thames Gateway has the potential to become one of the most dynamic and exciting communities in the UK.

Despite the development pressures and environmental problems facing the area, its distinctive landscape and wildlife remain crucial assets. Only by integrating these assets into the regeneration of the Gateway will it become truly sustainable. Conversely, if the natural environment is excluded or degraded, this will threaten the long-term success of development in the area.

The RSPB has long advocated the vital importance of the natural environment and accessible greenspace to sustainable development. Within the Thames Gateway, these elements are crucial.

The RSPB's contribution to the delivery of sustainable development of the Thames Gateway can be summarised through three overarching aims:

  • We will develop three RSPB flagship sites, for people and wildlife, which exemplify best practice for the sustainable regeneration of the Thames Gateway.

  • We will ensure that properly funded greenspace is an integral part of Thames Gateway regeneration, putting the environment, biodiversity and quality of life at its heart.

  • We will take an active role in establishing the Thames Gateway as a model of sustainable development, creating a positive new image for the area. To do so, we must acknowledge the Gateway's environmental capacity and aim for the highest standards of efficiency in energy and water use.
