EU Life-Nature Saline Lagoons Project

EU LIFE

The RSPB, Hampshire County Council and Havant Borough Council are working together to enhance a significant proportion (15%) of England's saline lagoons in a project supported by funding from the European Union Life-Nature programme.

The lagoons in this project support important populations of avocets (53% of the UK population) and little terns (8% of the UK population).

This EU Life-Nature project is also making a significant contribution to the first objective of the UK National Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for Saline Lagoons by maintaining and enhancing UK saline lagoons. Through this, it is helping to conserve some of the highly specialised and threatened lagoon-dependent species. The project will enhance the conservation interest of over 175 ha of saline lagoon habitat at the 10 Natura 2000 sites in the project.
