EU Birds Directive - 25 years on

Dunlins over Cardiff Bay
The adoption of the Directive, formally known as ‘a Directive on
the conservation of wild birds 79/405’, represented a landmark in
European bird conservation.
Together with its counterpart, the ‘Habitats’ Directive, the
Birds Directive has made a key contribution to conservation in the
UK, benefiting wildlife and people.
Twenty-five years on, those who drew up the Birds Directive are
to be applauded for producing legislation that is still working for
the broader public interest.
