Northern Ireland

Refuse tip at Foyle Estuary

Nationally important places for wildlife are notified by the Environment and Heritage Service, the governments statutory body for nature conservation in Northern Ireland, as Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI's) under the Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands (NI) Order 1985. Currently, there are over 190 ASSIs in Northern Ireland.

The RSPB works to protect Northern Ireland's special wildlife places from damage, and improve their management. The improvements to SSSI protection in England and Wales through the Countryside and Rights of Way Act were made, in part, as a result of the support given by members to the RSPB's 'Land for Life' campaign. RSPB Northern Ireland is now campaigning for improvements to be made to the protection given to Northern Irelands special places for wildlife.
