Population Census of Merlin in the UK

Male merlin perched on old fence post, Shetland
Adult male Merlin perched on fence post

The Merlin is a Schedule 1 species and occurs on the amber list of birds of conservation concern in the UK. Keeping a close eye on its population trend is therefore a key conservation priority.

Project objectives

  • To derive a population estimate for the Merlin, thus updating our understanding of the species' current conservation status in the UK
  • To examine at a rudimentary level the effects of habitat and food abundance on the breeding distribution of Merlin

Work planned or underway

Merlin census work being undertaken by RSPB staff and volunteers, and Raptor Study Group members between April-August 2008. Data will be analysed and the project written up in autumn 2008.
