Wider Biodiversity Benefits of Agri-Environment Schemes designed for birds

Corncrake habitat, Colonsay
An early cover strip, managed to attract breeding Corncrakes, in North-Western Scotland. One of the management prescriptions examined for potential benefits to other biodiversity.

Agri-Environment Schemes in the UK have been shown to deliver for target bird species in several cases. To what extent does delivery for these target birds represent delivery for a wider range of biodiversity?

Project objectives

  • To determine the effects on a wide range of taxonomic groups of agri-environment scheme management prescriptions designed for 3 target birds species: Corncrake, Stone Curlew and Cirl Bunting.

Work planned or underway

Studies on areas managed for Corncrake; 2006 and 2007. Studies on areas managed for Stone Curlews; 2007.

Studies on areas managed for Cirl Buntings; 2008.

Data analysis ongoing and due to be completed in 2009.
