Sustainable Forestry Practice and Biodiversity Impacts

Long-tailed tit building nest
Long-tailed tit building nest

Certification of timber production as sustainable forest practice is increasing in the UK & worldwide. Sustainable forestry is a means of providing raw materials whilst also providing a range of other ecosystem services and social benefits. Within sustainable forestry guidelines there are provisions for identifying and enhancing protected wildlife and habitats. However is not known to what extent the silvicultural techniques used for timber production affect wider biodiversity.

Project objectives

  • Identify UK forestry management practice most likely to affect forest biodiversity
  • Identify if changes to forest management within commercial sustainable forestry could provide biodiversity benefits.

Key dates so far

  • The remit and aims of the review have been identified
  • Evidence based review methodology and protocols produced

Work planned or underway

The literature review is underway and reports are due to be produced by December 2011.
