Simple fractions

This activity addresses several National Curriculum (England and Wales) requirements at Key Stage 2.

This activity addresses several National Curriculum (England and Wales) requirements at Key Stage 2 and covers the following Learning Objectives defined by the National Numeracy Strategy Guidelines: 

Year 3 autumn and summer. 

Fractions, Learning Objectives 21, 23 

Recognise unit fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/10... and use them to find fractions of shapes and numbers.
Begin to recognise simple fractions that are several parts of a whole, such as 3/4, 2/3 or 3/10.   

Making decisions, Learning Objective 61 

Choose and use appropriate operations (including multiplication and division) to solve word problems, and appropriate ways of calculating: mental, mental with jottings, pencil and paper. 

If pupils show particular interest in this activity they might like to take part in Wildsquare, the children's wildlife survey being run by the junior section of the RSPB.

The Activity 

Using the Student Activity Sheet pupils are required to answer a series of word problems involving the calculation of fractions and to collate their answers in a table.
