Interpreting information

Pupils are asked to record and organise data provided in the form of an illustration and then to present it as an appropriate graph. Extension activities suggest live bird watching and the use of ICT.

If pupils show particular interest in this activity they might like to take part in Wildsquare, the children's wildlife survey being run by the junior section of the RSPB.

Resources: Student Activity Sheet

Age Range: Key Stage 1, year 2.

The Activity

Information is provided as an illustration that can be given to pupils or printed out as an OHP for use in a whole class teaching session. Pupils should collate the data from the illustration, calculate the frequency of bird visits, answer a series of questions and present the information as a block graph or pictogram.

Teachers wanting to spend more time on this activity could ask pupils to collect real data from a school bird table or a similar site. Data collected in this way could then be used for similar activities using ICT. For instructions for building a bird table and bird feeders in D&T lessons see Primary Design and Technology (RSPB); see Birds In The Primary Curriculum for a wide range of lesson ideas.
