Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

Children learning about the countryside at RSPB Ebbw Vale nature reserve

The RSPB believes that outdoor education is an invaluable means by which young people can learn about their environment and use it as an educational resource.

RSPB Cymru is a founding member of the Real World Learning Cymru Partnership, whose overall purpose is to assist in the promotion and delivery of Out-of-Classroom Learning, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of its value and its vital contribution to sustainable development and global citizenship in Wales.

Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) is about: 'the links between society, economy and environment and between our own lives and those of people throughout the world; the needs and rights of both present and future generations; the relationships between power, resources and human rights; the local and global implications of everything we do and the actions that individuals and organisations can take in response to local and global issues.'  (ACCAC, Estyn, National Assembly and DFID, 2002)

A global citizen can be defined as someone who:

  • is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their role as a world citizen;
  • respects and values diversity;
  • has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally;
  • is outraged by social injustice;
  • participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global;
  • is willing to act in order to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place;
  • takes responsibility for their actions (Oxfam, quoted in Douglas, 2001, p.90)

Depending on individual requirements, it may be possible to study aspects of ESDGC during a visit to one of the five RSPB Cymru field teaching sites.  These are located at: Conwy, Dolygaer (near Merthyr Tydfil), Lake Vyrnwy (near Welshpool), Newport Wetlands and Ynys-hir (near Machynlleth).
The selection of themes and concepts that can be covered will depend on which site is visited.
