Discover ancient landscapes, habitats dating back to the Bronze Age, signs of modern military activity and lots more!
From prehistoric burial mounds and standing stones to Second World War pillboxes, RSPB reserves are full of interesting archaeological sites that can be visited at the same time as exploring wild places and seeing amazing wildlife.
Many of these sites are key to the story of how the reserve landscapes have evolved. Did you know that the ancient heaths at Arne were created by prehistoric farmers cutting down trees and grazing their animals, or that Minsmere was created in 1940 by flooding fields to make a defence against invasion?
