Cycling at Arne

Sand lizard

Arne is the RSPB's flagship heathland site on a peninsula out into Poole Harbour. It has stunning wildlife including heathland birds such as nightjars and Dartford warblers, coastal birds like little egrets and avocets, as well as the chance of seeing rarer creatures like seals and sand lizards.

There is a lot to see at any time of year, with beautiful views across Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills.

RSPB Arne nature reserve is five miles from the nearest train station at Wareham and the Purbeck cycle ride.

If you're an RSPB member, show your membership card at Purbeck Cycle Hire at Wareham station to get a 10 % discount (find out more on our 'how to get here' page).

Route 6 sets off from the picturesque Wareham Quay and along the peninsula to within a mile and a half of Arne nature reserve. It's easy cycling along this quiet lane with views across farmland and heathland.

At the Arne nature reserve car park there are cycle stands and toilet facilities as well as a small reception building. A bridleway through the site is an easy cycle and takes you past the RSPB's Arne farm, through oak woodland, heathland and down onto the beach at the edge of Poole Harbour.

There are cycle stands here where you can leave your bike and take a relaxing wander along the shore or around the heathland to one of the dragonfly ponds or the bird hide on the way marked trails. A great place to get way from it all for the day and relax.
