Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Arctic skua

Arctic skuas are fierce seabirds described as 'piratical' - they chase other birds, such as terns, and force them to give up their food. They come to Birsay Moors to breed but spend all their other time at sea.

Curlew

Curlews are large, brown wading birds with very long, curved bills. In spring, you can hear their gorgeous, 'bubbling' song.

Hen harrier

Hen harriers can be seen here at any time of year. To see a 'ghostly' grey adult male can be especially thrilling.

Merlin

Keep your eyes peeled for a dashing merlin on a high-speed hunt.

Red-throated diver

Red-throated divers are adapted for life on the water - they are very clumsy indeed on land as their feet are so far back on their bodies. Look for them as they go fishing.
