How to get here

By bicycle (Sustrans cycle route)

The Yare Valley cycle route runs close to the reserve. The proposed future route of National Cycle Network Route 1 also runs close to the reserve, while its current route passes on the other side of the River Yare. Cycling from Brundall, head east along Brundall High Street and continue under the bridge towards Strumpshaw. Soon after you pass the Strumpshaw sign, turn right into Stone Road, and immediately right again into Low Road. Strumpshaw Fen nature reserve is 500 m down Low Road on the right. To reach Buckenham Marshes, continue past Strumpshaw Fen, turn right at the road junction, over the level crossing and continue until Buckenham train station, adjacent to the marsh.

By train

A number of trains on the Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft (Wherry Lines) services call at Buckenham station by request at the weekend. Four trains each way call on Sundays and Public Holidays, one on Saturdays. The entrance to the reserve is adjacent to the station. The service is operated by 'one' Railway. Check connections on the National Rail Enquiries website, or call 08457 484950.

Why not use the train to visit Berney marshes (at Berney Arms station) in the morning and Buckenham and Strumpshaw in the afternoon? A Wherry Lines Rover ticket gives a day's unlimited travel on the trains between Norwich, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth at low cost.

All stops at Buckenham and Berney Arms are request stops. Please make sure you tell the conductor you want to get off and give a clear signal to the approaching train when wanting to board. Unfortunately, in the event of service disruption due to engineering works, replacement buses will not call at Buckenham or Berney Arms.

On other days, the closest station is Brundall (2.5 miles or 4 km from reserve) on the same line. From the station walk up the hill (Station Road) towards Brundall village. At the main road turn right and walk through Brundall. Continue under the bridge towards Strumpshaw. Soon after you pass the Strumpshaw sign, turn right into Stone Road, and immediately right again into Low Road. Strumpshaw Fen nature reserve is 500 m down Low Road on the right. To reach Buckenham Marshes, continue past Strumpshaw Fen, turn right at the road junction and continue until Buckenham train station, adjacent to the marsh.

By bus

An hourly bus service from Norwich stops 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the reserve on the Brundall to Strumpshaw Road at the junction of Long Lane and Stone Road (weekdays and Saturdays only). From the bus stop (arriving from direction of Norwich), walk towards Brundall for 40 m, then turn left down Stone Road and immediately turn right into Low Road. Follow Low Road past RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. Turn right at the road junction and continue until Buckenham station, adjacent to the marsh. Buses are numbers 17 and 17A operated by First Eastern Counties.

By road

The reserve is best aproached from the village of Brundall which lies east of Norwich just off the A47. From the A47 roundabout, drive through Brundall and continue on the same road out towards Strumpshaw. Soon after you pass the Strumpshaw sign, turn right into Stone Road. Follow Stone Road and take the second road on the right (also Stone Road). Take the first turn on the right onto Station Road, which leads to Buckenham train station and Buckenham Marshes.
