Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Buzzard

Buzzards can be seen circling overhead throughout the year. Visit in summer to see the young birds joining the adults in the air to perfect their flying technique.

Great spotted woodpecker

Look and listen for great spotted woodpeckers anywhere on the reserve. In spring, you could hear males 'drumming' on dead wood. They also have a sharp 'kick' and chattering calls.

Jay

You're likely to hear a jay's horrible screech before you see it. They have an undulating flight and white rump which stand out. Watch for them searching for (and burying) acorns in autumn.

Nuthatch

Nuthatches are very charismatic residents of Church Wood. They are the only British birds to be able to climb head-first down trees, where you can see them foraging and excavating nest holes. Also listen for their loud calls.

Treecreeper

Treecreepers are usually quiet, unassuming birds. In autumn and winter, they often join large flocks of tits and other birds. Look out for them creeping up the trunks of trees, spiralling round in search of tiny food items.
