Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Avocet

Watch out for avocets swinging their long, curved bills to and fro as they step gracefully through the pools.

Bittern

Bitterns are brown, secretive herons, camouflaged to hide amongst reeds. Visit in spring to hear male bitterns 'booming' or summer to watch the parents making feeding flights.

Marsh harrier

Marsh harriers can be seen at any time of year at Dingle Marshes. Watch for the dark brown females and paler males gliding and hanging in the air over the reeds.

Stonechat

Perky stonechats perch proudly in prominent places, including the tops of bushes and on posts and fences. They are a common sight here. Pairs remain together throughout the year and you can see family groups in summer.

Wigeon

During winter, flocks of wigeons are a daily sight. Wintering birds arrive from early September and numbers build up to a peak, usually in January.
