    A cracking day...

A cracking day began with two wheatears and a spotted flycatcher beside the access track first thing followed by a hobby perched up near the boardwalk.  A second spotted flycatcher was in the car park bushes, where a wood warbler was found mid-morning.  A constant stream of swifts, swallows, sand martins and house martins passed north over Burrowes pit for most of the day and it soon became apparent that these weren' t the only birds on the move.  Small flocks of black-tailed and bar-tailed godwits and whimbrels flew over and other wader sightings included avocet, greenshank, turnstone, knot, common sandpiper and grey plover.  Denge Marsh gully was full of birds including black restarts, blackcaps and garden warbler.  Several cuckoos and lesser whitethroats were seen around the trail and a whinchat was in Christmas Dell.

Can't wait to get out and have a look myself!

    A fine May Day...

Two fine days in a row and there's been plenty to see right across the reserve.  Whitethroats, sedge and reed warblers can be fouind in most areas of suitable habitat and the occasional lesser whitethroat can also be seen, or more often heard.  There seems to have been plenty of birds on the move over the past few days with whimbrels, swallows, house and sand martins, wheatears and yellow wagtails (including several blue-headed and channel types) all recorded in good numbers.  A cuckoo has been seen and heard regularly at the ARC site and several hobbies have been hawking insects over the Hooker's pits area.

Waders present in the past week included avocet, greenshank, spotted redshank, little ringed plover and common sandpiper.  Seabirds on the move included little tern and black tern.

The long-tailed duck is still here and the bittern is still booming and was seen on Sunday.

    Very vocal bittern...

There were a lot of happy visitors around at the weekend as our booming bittern put on quite a performance.  He was even seen briefly, as was another bird - presumably a female.

Pairs of garganey were seen both on the ARC pit and on Denge Marsh and the long-tailed duck was also seen at ARC.

There was a good variety of waders around, although not in high numbers.  Two little ringed plovers could be seen well from Firth hide, four bar-tailed godwits were seen from the Visitor Centre, three snipe were tucked up in the vegetation on New Excavations and a ruff was on Denge Marsh.  The first green sandpiper of the spring flew over Boulderwall Farm early on Saturday morning and eight whimbrel were in the field to the right of the entrance track.  Late on Sunday afternoon a little stint was found at the ARC site.

There was some excitement on Sunday afternoon as an osprey flew north over the Water Tower.  Sadly it appeared as little more than a dot when viewed from the main car park but this was more than compensated for by the two spoonbills that dropped into Burrowes pit a little while later.

Two little gulls, a few common terns and two pied flycatchers were also of note.

    Plenty on the move today...

It took a bit of finding but the ring-necked duck is still here, although only visible from the Springfield Bridge on Dengemarsh road.  Also at Denge Marsh were a pair of garganey and a whimbrel.  Christmas Dell was full of singing warblers - Cetti's, sedge, willow and chiffchaff, whilst at the ARC site the first whitethroat, lesser whitethroat and reed warbler were heard this morning.  A little ringed plover was also at the ARC site and a ring ouzel was seen briefly near the access track.

    Ring-necked duck

I was spurred into action on my day off by news of a male ring-necked duck at Hooker's pits.  A cracking bird, it stayed around all day although it spent quite a lot of time hiding!  No news of it yet this morning but it was pouring down first thing making observation difficult.  The sun's out now so hope to have more news later.

In addition to the duck, yesterday's highlights included a Slavonian grebe (going into summer plumage) on New Diggings, three wheatears and two yellow wagtails.  The long-tailed duck is still here and there are now good numbers of sedge warblers all around the site.

STOP PRESS: Ring-necked duck now on Denge Marsh.

Iceland gull pays us a visit...

Unsurprisingly given the weather conditions there were no new migrants reported yesterday but the spoonbill was still with us, a male garganey was seen at Denge Marsh and a little ringed plover was at the ARC site.

A much better day today with a first winter Iceland gull on Burrowes pit and the first yellow wagtail of the year seen near Makepeace hide.  The long-tailed duck has moved back to the ARC pit, where the spoonbill is still in residence and quite lively.  Three little ringed plovers are at the eastern end of the pit and three Mediterranean gulls have also been seen.  A few swallows have been spotted, a wheatear was in Denge Marsh gully this morning and chiffchaff and sedge warbler are aroud the trail.

A few more migrants and no sign of bad weather...

Highlights so far today: spoonbill on the ARC pit, bittern booming at Hooker's pits, bullfinch in the willow trail, willow warbler at ARC and the main car park bushes, blackcap near the viewing screen and two swallows flying over.  Yesterday three garganey (two males and a female) were on the lake near Boulderwall Farm and two little ringed plovers were at the eastern end of the ARC pit where the first whimbrel of the season was also seen.

    A spoonbill day...

The day started well, despite (or perhaps because of) the misty murky conditions, with a sedge warbler heard singing at the ARC site.  Four little ringed plovers were also at ARC and two wheatears were in Denge Marsh gully.  The long-tailed duck was still on Burrowes pit along with a couple of goldeneyes and two bitterns were seen from the viewpoint at Hooker's pits.  A ring ouzel was seen near the access track and whilst looking for it we spotted two sand martins flying over.  Most exciting of all though was the spoonbill that landed on Burrowes pit, near Firth hide, mid-afternoon.  In untypical fashion it was quite active and even flew around a bit giving good views from the Visitor Centre.
