Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Buzzard

Buzzards can be seen circling overhead throughout the year. Visit in summer to see the young birds joining the adults in the air to perfect their flying technique.

Dipper

Look for dippers feeding around the edges of the burn. They can even walk underwater!

Grey heron

Watch for stately grey herons stalking fish along the burn. Approach quietly and you can watch them as they try to spear fish.

Grey wagtail

Grey wagtails can be seen along the burn as they hunt small insects at the water's edge. Listen for their sharp calls and watch out for their tails wagging up and down.

Song thrush

You can hear song thrushes singing from late winter onwards, with their characteristic habit of mimicking other birds and other sounds, and repeating each phrase two or three times.
