About Fetlar

Arctic skua downy chick with egg tooth visible, RSPB North Hill reserve, Orkney

The whole island of Fetlar is a haven for flora and fauna, and a great place to come exploring. Along the coast you might be lucky enough to see otters. Park at the car park at the Loch of Funzie and en route to the RSPB hide at the Mires of Funzie look out for red-necked phalaropes at the loch. The female is more colourful than the male, and performs most of the courtship rituals! The island is full of birds in summer, including red-throated divers, golden plovers, skuas and wild rock doves.

Information for disabled visitors

The track to the hide is rather rough and unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Information for dog owners

Dogs are allowed on all footpaths. We request that people keep dogs under tight control on a lead due to the presence of ground-nesting birds.
