Our work here

Drake teal bathing

Fetlar, on the Shetland Islands, protects a mosaic of upland habitats, including serpentine mire. It is home to important populations of scarce breeding birds, notably red-necked phalaropes. The RSPB is managing the reserve for the benefit of birds and for its broader biodiversity.

Waders in the mire

We are working to maintain the mire for breeding birds, whilst minimising disturbance. We manage this habitat largely by raising water levels and excluding livestock during the summer, then reducing water levels and encouraging grazing again in the autumn.

Finding out more

We undertake a continuous programme of research and monitoring, focusing on key breeding birds, as well as water levels and plant communities. Our findings help inform our management of the reserve, and contribute to the biodiversity action plan (BAP) for red-necked phalarope. We also carry out surveys of under-recorded fauna and flora, and obtain advice on their habitat requirements where necessary.

Reaching out

We are working to develop a positive profile with the local community, and among landowners and other key audiences. This will make it easier to implement our management plan. We are also consolidating our good relations with all relevant authorities and conservation organisations.

Vision for visitors

We currently receive about 3,000 visitors a year. We are working to raise numbers by providing more facilities and publicity, and aim especially to increase school visits. Work will include maintaining interpretative signs, holding at least one annual public event, and revising our Shetland Reserves leaflet.

Taking care

We are working to manage the reserve to the RSPB's high standards. Routine measures include regular inspections of property and equipment, and strict adherence to health and safety guidelines.

We will also undertake an environmental audit in accordance with the society's 'greening' policy, and a disability audit with a view to upgrading disabled access. We will ensure that the reserve is run in an efficient and cost-effective manner, making use of all available grants and operating a proper accounting system.
