Explore Moor - Youth & Education

Children enjoying Exploor Moor activities at Geltsdale

Explore Moor is an exciting community outreach project based at Geltsdale.

We aim to encourage young people from all backgrounds to experience and enjoy the fantastic moorland landscape and wildlife of the North Pennines.

The project is funded by Natural England, through Access to Nature, as part of the Big Lottery Fund's Changing Spaces programme. This means all visits are free of charge. Even better is that we can organise free minibus transport to get your group to and from the reserve.

What we offer

We provide activities for schools and youth groups, such as exploring different habitats, learning to survive outside, and orienteering. All these have links back to the curriculum so your children will learn as well as have fun! To find out more, click on the activity programme downloads to the right and see the Teaching Support Pack section below.

We can also come out and visit your school or group to prepare them for their visit, or as a follow up. Sessions involve hands-on games and activities linked to your visit.

Outreach visits could tie in with any community projects you have running or assist with advice on improving your grounds for wildlife.

Discover Wildlife film

This short film features children from Hallbankgate Village School, as they develop their skills in birdwatching and stream dipping, at RSPB Geltsdale. The film is a great pre-visit introduction to the reserve and activities to show your class before they arrive.

This video requires Adobe Flash Player version 9. Download it for free.

The footage is taken from an award-nominated film - Sprogwatch - in which children present the wildlife of Geltsdale in a Springwatch style. Click on the link to the left of this page to view this wonderful film in full.

Teaching Support Pack

If you would like to bring your group to discover wildlife at the Geltsdale Reserve, why not download our user-friendly Teaching Support Pack - you'll find it at the top right-hand side of this page.

In it you'll find:

  • Easy to follow activity instructions
  • Details of equipment you can borrow
  • Colourful wildlife identification keys
  • Pre- and post-visit activity ideas

'The reserve is a really valuable teaching and learning resource and the teacher's pack is great and easy to use'
Philippa Kidd, Primary Teacher and acting Head, Hallbankgate Village School

So what are you waiting for?
