Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Grey heron

Watch for stately grey herons stalking fish along the ditches. Approach quietly and you can watch them as they try to spear fish.

Little egret

These dainty little white herons can be seen here throughout the year. You can see them fishing, stirring up fish fry from ditches with their feet.

Mute swan

Mute swans are resident at Greylake. In spring and summer, watch for the small, grey cygnets being attended to by their protective parents.

Reed bunting

Spring is the time to see male reed buntings at their best. They perch in willows within the wet areas of the reserve and sing their simple song.

Yellow wagtail

Yellow wagtails arrive on the marshes in April. They can be seen scurrying around the feet of livestock on the reserve as they catch insects, or flying overheard with a distinctive 'seep' call.
