Wildlife awards

Hobbister is one of the best places for wildlife in the UK.

Top things to do in Spring

  1. Visit the beautiful Waukmill Bay
  2. Take the circular 1.8 mile (3 km) cliff top walk; Highland Park distillery will have begun their peat-cutting operation
  3. Spend time overlooking Scapa Flow and maybe the peregrines which breed nearby will come and check you out!

Top things to do in Summer

  1. At low water visit Waukmill Bay - one of the nicest beaches on Orkney. Consider a swim on the incoming tide...
  2. Take the circular walk and enjoy views across Scapa Flow
  3. Look out for twites which breed along the cliffs at Hobbister

Top things to do in Autumn

  1. Visit Waukmill Bay and stretch your legs
  2. Take a stroll around the southern end of the reserve. Look out for the impressive aerial abilities of the fulmars
  3. Migrating waders feed on the beach at low tide - have a look in the pools behind the beach

Top things to do in Winter

  1. Visit Waukmill Bay
  2. Take the circular walk for some light exercise and maybe see a hunting hen harrier
  3. Scan Scapa Flow for wintering divers and consider the Flow full with the German fleet at the end of WWI
