About Hodbarrow

Little tern hovering

Image: Steve Round

The great crested grebe was hunted almost to extinction in the UK for its ornate head plumes. Thankfully, they are now protected, and at Hodbarrow in the spring you can see their amazing courtship dance. You can also watch three species of tern in astonishing close-up – our hide is only 35 yards from their nests.

If you go for a stroll on the pushchair-friendly nature trail, look out for marsh and bee orchids adding colour to the flower-rich grasslands.
