Healthy farm – healthy food
Lake Vyrnwy is an organic farm, which is owned by Severn Trent Water and managed by the RSPB.The farm is looked after in ways that benefit birds, wildlife and the environment. The sheep graze on heather, natural herbs and grasses on the hills, which is said to improve the flavour of their meat. This unique taste of organic Welsh mountain lamb is now available at the RSPB shop on site.
Farming for birds
The RSPB nurtures a rich mixture of habitats at Lake Vyrnwy to attract a variety of birds. The heather moorland, blanket bog, woodland, grassland and open water are home to some of the most threatened birds in Wales, such as hen harriers, ring ouzels and black grouse.
Lake Vyrnwy is the source of water for the people of Liverpool. The pollution control measures we have implemented, combined with the organic farming methods, means that the quality of water in the surrounding environment is well protected.
The RSPB and Severn Trent Water are demonstrating that it is possible to run an efficient farm while benefiting local wildlife and people, and protecting an important source of drinking water.
If you visit the RSPB shop at Lake Vyrnwy, you will be able to buy frozen lamb and take it home with you the same day. Stock is available all year, but we advise you to call the shop beforehand to ensure your order will be ready on the day. We look forward to offering you a warm welcome.
