Expect to see good numbers of this elegant bird in the spring and summer. The avocet's upturned bill is ideally suited to finding food in the shallow pools.
When the barn owls have young to feed, you could see them at any time of day as they scour the grassland for small voles and shrews to take back to their nest.
Watch out for bitterns in winter here. You might have to stand very quietly at dusk to see them fly in across the reeds to roost, or you might be lucky and see one climbing up the stems!
Everyone knows the cuckoo's call. From late April, listen and watch out for them, as the adults arrive and start looking for mates. You could see one flying low, similar in shape to a kestrel. | ) |
Hobbies are falcons which arrive at Langford in late April, leaving in September. They are very agile and fast - they hunt small birds like martins, and dragonflies, which they catch with their feet. Watch carefully and you'll see them passing their prey up to their beaks to eat in flight!
