About Loch Garten

Red squirrel in Scots pine tree

When ospreys returned to breed in Scotland, this ancient Caledonian pinewood is where they chose to come. Now you can watch these magnificent birds in their natural glory, thanks to non-invasive CCTV. The reserve also has some excellent walks, with the chance to see red squirrels, dragonflies and crested tits.

Early in spring, join us for Caper Watch and see the spectacular display of the capercaillie, Scotland's largest grouse.

If you are new to birdwatching...

April to August, ospreys and other wildlife can be easily seen from Osprey Centre. Expert help/interpretative staff always available, as are binoculars and telescopes. Expert-led programme of guided walks (May to August).

Information for families

Osprey Centre interpretation suitable for all ages, quiz sheet for children, drawing table for tots. Low-set telescopes and binoculars for children.

Information for dog owners

You can walk with your dog on any land in Scotland. We encourage responsible dog walking, and ask you to keep your dog close to you, preferably on a lead, especially between 1 April and 30 June, the season many birds nest on the ground.
