Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Black-throated diver

During spring, black-throated divers can sometimes be seen on the loch in their beautiful grey and black breeding plumage.

Curlew

Curlews are large, brown wading birds with very long, curved bills. In spring, you can hear their gorgeous, 'bubbling' song.

Osprey

Ospreys arrive in spring from their African wintering grounds. Watch for them making spectacular fishing attempts, though they are not always successful!

Red-throated diver

Red-throated divers are adapted for life on the water - they are very clumsy indeed on land as their feet are so far back on their bodies. Look for them on the loch as they go fishing.

Slavonian grebe

Slavonian grebes are Loch Ruthven's most special birds - this is the hub of the UK breeding population. From the hide, you can watch their fascinating behaviour without disturbing them.
