About Mill Dam

Calling redshank in meadow

Image: Nigel Blake

This natural marsh was dammed in the 1880s, providing an ideal habitat for birds throughout the year. In summer, you'll see large numbers of breeding wildfowl, including pintails, redshanks and wigeons, while in the winter migrating whooper swans and other birds visit the marsh. It's a great day out for all the family, with children's binoculars available in the hide.

Opening times

The hide is open at all times but there is no access to the reserve itself.

Entrance charges

Free, but donations to help us continue our work here are welcome.

Information for families

Our hide has special children's binoculars available and lots for children to see in spring and summer especially.

Information for dog owners

You can walk with your dog on any land in Scotland. We encourage responsible dog walking, and ask you to keep your dog close to you, preferably on a lead, especially between 1 April and 30 June, the season many birds nest on the ground.
