The sandflats and saltmarshes of Morecambe Bay are vital feeding grounds for a quarter of a million wading birds, ducks and geese. It's the second most important estuary in the UK and is protected by European and UK law.
We're involved in the conservation and management of the whole bay and own a significant area of saltmarsh and mudflats between Hest Bank and Silverdale as a nature reserve.
During the hour before high tide, spectacular flocks of waders gather to roost at Hest Bank. Tide tables are available from Leighton Moss reserve, eight miles (12.8 km) away. There is also a nature trail with hides overlooking coastal pools and the saltmarshes at nearby Leighton Moss.
Do not go out onto the saltmarsh or intertidal area - there are dangerous channels and quicksand.

Information for disabled visitors
Viewing is best from the local authority car park; the paths along the coast from the car park are not suitable for wheelchairs as they have an uneven surface.
Information for dog owners
Dogs are allowed anywhere. Please avoid disturbing the feeding wading birds along the shoreline.
