Accessibility

An alternative route will be available, via the use of a stile, but visitors who require wheelchair or pushchair access should ring the reserve office before arrival so that arrangements can be made to gain access through a locked gate. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Due to the nature of the slopes around the reserve, we are classed as an 'Access for the Adventurous' nature reserve. Access to the visitor centre, with great views of farmland birds in the winter months, and the hide at Welches Dam involve 1:12 for short distances in places.

Visiting groups

No coaches of more than 36 seats can be accommodated at the reserve due to the tight corner on the approach road. Please do not book larger coaches when visiting the reserve. Please phone the reserve office if you would like more information.

Car park

There are two designated parking bays at the southern end of the car park at Welches Dam. A crushed limestone base has been topped with fine basalt dust to give a smooth, well-drained surface. The visitor centre is 55 m away from the car park, the maximum gradient being 1:15 for 25 m on paviers; the route crosses a track that vehicles occasionally use. After crossing here, the path leads straight to the visitor centre.

Facilities

There are two picnic tables with spaces for wheelchair users outside the centre near the bird feeders, giving close views of tree sparrows year-round. The centre has information about latest sightings on a board outside while inside there is our bird log, a variety of leaflets and in late autumn, winter and early spring the area at the back of the centre can be buzzing with feeding birds.

Viewing facilities

To access the disabled hide, head from the car park cross the track and turn left. The path takes you up to the road where you turn right. The slope is steep as the road is reached and the road surface (40 m) is rough in places. The route goes across the bridge over the river (the slope here is 1:12 for 15 m). Follow the path on the right-hand side and go through the gate. Follow the tarmac path (1:19 for 38m) to the boardwalk. The surface (50m) is slightly uneven.

Then there are two gates, either side of a track, to get through. You are now on the final ascent (130 m tarmac path with a steepest gradient of 1:18 for 4 m) that has two perches to rest upon. Access the hide via the ramp or steps for views across the Washes.

Toilets

Toilets are located in the reserve car park.

The nearest adapted toilets are in Chatteris (approximately nine miles away). One is in Furrowfields and the other is in Station Road. Both require a RADAR key.
