If you enjoy walking and wildlife, Portmore Lough is a great day out at any time of year. During the summer the traditional hay meadows alongside the lough attract a bewildering variety of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, while in the winter greylag geese, whooper swans and thousands of ducks can be seen from the hide on the lough edge. If you’re coming in winter, we recommend wearing strong boots.
Opening times
The reserve is open at all times. When the car park is locked please park outside the gates.
Entrance charges
None, but donations to help us continue our work here are welcomed.
Information for families
The wide expanse of Portmore Lough Reserve makes it a great place for families to explore. Ask the Warden for the loan of binoculars or pond dipping nets.
The picnic area and toilets make Portmore Lough Reserve an ideal stopping off point. In summer, why not drop in for a barbeque?
The warden is happy to organise a guided walk or pond dipping activity for parties of eight or more.
Fancy a ‘wild’ children’s party? We can set aside the shelter and picnic tables for your own food and provide up to an hour and a half of supervised activities.
Contact the Warden well in advance to discuss availability.
Information for dog owners
Dogs are allowed anywhere. They must be kept under close control at all times. During the bird-breeding season, this may mean on a lead. Please check reserve notices for current restrictions. It is essential that you clean up after your dog as wheelchair users frequent the reserve.
