Star species

Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.

Barn owl

When the barn owls have young to feed, you could see them at any time of day as they scour the grassland for small voles and shrews to take back to their nest.

Cetti's warbler

Cetti's warblers are recent colonists of the UK. They are very often hard to see, but their 'explosive' song is unmistakable, once learned.

Great crested grebe

Great crested grebes are renowned for their dramatic courtship displays, where the pair 'dances' together. Later in the year, watch for parent grebes carrying their stripy young on their backs!

Kingfisher

Stay alert for the sight of an electric-blue bullet speeding past. Kingfishers are a year-round attraction at Rockland. In spring and summer, watch out for adults carrying fish back to their nests in their beaks.

Mute swan

Mute swans are resident at Rockland Marshes. In spring and summer, watch for the small, grey cygnets being attended to by their protective parents.
