Teesside Environmental Trust

Teesside Environmental Trust (TET) was established in April 1998 with the aim of providing a nature reserve of international importance at Saltholme.

They are a registered charity, constituted to represent and be part of the community surrounding the reserve at Port Clarence.

The Board decided to develop the core of the site, some 660 of the 1000 acres and utilised the expertise of their members, four from elected local councillors, business representatives, conservationists and ecologists.

TET agreed to partner with the RSPB in early 2000 and in August 2007 the whole of the 1000-acre site was leased to the RSPB. Our joint endeavours resulted in the opening of Saltholme wildlife reserve and discovery park by the BBC’s Kate Humble on 6 March 2009.

The Trust is now supporting the RSPB in two new areas of development at Saltholme:

1. Upgrading the existing facilities at Saltholme to welcome and accommodate 100,000 visitors per year and 93,000 in the first full year.

 2. Collaborating with our neighbours to create a more strategic asset for Teesside and a more diverse experience for the enjoyment of visitors.

All the Board members live locally and liase with RSPB on a regular basis in respect of the 99-year lease. David Kitchen has been Chair for 11 years and would welcome feedback from any visitor to Saltholme
