Cycling in the Yare valley

Swallowtail butterfly on lilac

At Strumpshaw Fen you can walk around the reedbeds, woodlands and orchid-rich meadows and you could chance upon marsh harriers, bitterns and kingfishers.

In summer, the meadows are blooming with flowers and there is an array of dragonflies and butterflies, including the spectacular swallowtail. Buckenham Marshes is a traditionally managed grazing marsh.

Strumpshaw Fen and Buckenham Marshes (north of the river Yare) are on the Yare Valley Cycle Route (Norwich-Reedham-Norwich), and Surlingham Church Marsh (south of the river) is very close to it (and this part is also National Cycle Network route 1).

Apart from Norwich, stations at Brundall, Buckenham (weekend-only service) and Cantley are close to the north-side reserves and are linked by quiet lanes. Cycle parking is available at Strumpshaw by the visitor centre, at Buckenham by the information sign, next to the station, and on the station at Cantley (unfortunately there is no secure bike storage at Surlingham).
