Nature trails
There are two circular walks: the fen trail (2.3 miles/3.7 km) and the woodland trail (1.6 miles/2.6 km), which can be combined to make a 3 mile (4.8 km) circuit. There is also a summer meadow trail loop of 0.4 mile (0.7 km). The trails are not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, though paths near to reception are firm and reasonably level. Many sections of the nature trails can get wet and muddy during the winter.
Educational facilities
Strumpshaw Fen has an exciting education programme for school visits designed to bring learning to life. Children will be able to explore nature for themselves by studying at first hand the birds, animals, plants and habitats at Strumpshaw Fen.
Led by experienced field teachers, the half- or full-day visits are carefully crafted to open eyes and minds to the captivating world around us. Pupils can explore iconic Broads habitat including woodland, pond and meadow habitats, in areas designated specifically for educational use and within easy walking distance.
Our main teaching season runs in the summer term when Strumpshaw Fen is buzzing with life, but the reserve offers exciting opportunities for contact with nature throughout the year.
We welcome visits from Key Stage 1 and 2 classes and are also keen to develop our programme to accommodate the curriculum needs of Key Stage 3 and 4. We also welcome visits from Brownies, Cubs and other extra curricula groups. Please get in touch to discuss the many learning opportunities that this site offers with its rich variety of habitats and wildlife in the heart of the Broads.
We can also offer visits to your school. Our experienced field teachers offer a varied programme of topics to suit your needs. We can help you make the most of your visit to Strumpshaw Fen with either a pre-trip visit or a follow up session.
The RSPB is Europe's largest wildlife conservation charity. Here in Norfolk we are working hard to protect your much-loved local wildlife. Strumpshaw Fen offers an exciting opportunity for your pupils to connect with the timeless beauty of the Broads and to be inspired to protect nature and the environment.
