Cycling at The Lodge
11 June 2009
The Lodge is fast becoming a real cycling destination, with three routes available from Sandy. You can explore the woodland, heath and acid grassland here; we're restoring the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire.
National Cycle Network route 12 heads down Stratford Road, immediately east of the railway station, and leads to the southern end of the reserve, where a bridleway leads up through the reserve to the Gatehouse.
Alternatively, if you use the main B1042 road towards the Gatehouse, you can get off it part way and ride a new, unsurfaced path through the reserve (although you may wish to walk up the first hill - it's easy after that!).
Coming from Sandy town centre, take the Old Cambridge Road from the Market Square, across the railway and on to the Everton road, then right onto a Bridleway south to the Gatehouse. Cycle parking is available at the Gatehouse. Use Ordnance Survey map Explorer 208. The RSPB is also working with Sustrans and local authorities to make the local cycle network even better!
