Each season brings a different experience at our nature reserves. In spring, the air is filled with birdsong as they compete to establish territories and attract a mate. In summer, look out for young birds making their first venture into the outside world. Autumn brings large movements of migrating birds - some heading south to a warmer climate, others seeking refuge in the UK from the cold Arctic winter. In winter, look out for large flocks of birds gathering to feed, or flying at dusk to form large roosts to keep warm.
Spring
Spring is a lovely time to visit Top Lodge. Not only are the woods full of birdsong and drumming woodpeckers, but red kites are pairing up and starting to build their nests. From the end of April, catch our red kite nest camera.
Summer
On a summer visit, you stand a good chance of seeing some of the fascinating insects and reptiles which also live in the woods. Keep an eye out for grass snakes, butterflies and dragonflies.
Autumn
During Autumn fungi flourish in the woods, even in the car park! Squirrels and jays search out and bury acorns, ready for the colder weather ahead. In the evenings listen out for the roaring sound of fallow deer rutting.
Winter
The kites gather in the afternoons prior to going to their roosting site in large numbers - it's a spectacular sight. Other birds you might encounter are siskins, crossbills and buzzards.
