Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve.
Look and listen for great spotted woodpeckers anywhere around Fineshade Wood. In spring, you could hear males 'drumming' on dead wood. They have a sharp 'kick' call.
Less colourful than other members of the tit family, marsh tits are brown and white with a glossy, black cap and bib. Listen out for their calls - 'pitchoo' - they sound like they are sneezing.
Nuthatches are very charismatic visitors to Top Lodge. They are the only British birds to be able to climb head-first down trees, where you can see them foraging and excavating nest holes.
Red kites now breed in good numbers around Rockingham Forest, following a successful reintroduction scheme. You could see them around Fineshade Woods, or live footage on the screen at the information centre during the breeding season.
Siskins are charming yellow, green and black finches which like the woodland at Top Lodge. Check the treetops for them, where they hang upside down to obtain seeds from alder cones.
