Before you visit

  • Open 8 am-9 pm (or dusk if earlier)
  • Free entry
  • No visitor centre, catering or toilets at present. More visitor facilities planned in future
  • Registered assistance dogs, and other dogs on leads, welcome at all times.

How to get here

  • Nearest railway station, Rochford, 7 miles (11 km) away. Taxi rank. Accessible taxis include Andrew’s taxis, tel: 01702 200200
  • Nearest bus stop, Canewdon, 3 miles (5 km) away. Stephensons Route 60 from Southend on Sea
  • Follow brown tourism signs from Rochford
  • Ferry from Burnham-on-Crouch, currently berthing at Essex Marina, 1 mile (1.5 km) away. Dedicated jetty near visitor facilities planned in future

Car parking 

  • 24 spaces
  • Surfaced (crushed concrete topped with granite chippings)
  • No lighting
  • No height restrictions.

Nature trails

  • Public footpath runs from car park along full length of northern seawall. This will remain open while visitor facilities, including 10 miles (15 km) of new and improved access routes, are being developed
  • Unsurfaced grass paths. 1:12 ramp (without steps at present) up wall. Wide gate. No other width restrictions or stiles (on RSPB land). Five driftwood seats at regular intervals. Stout footwear recommended.

Viewing facilities

  • Raised seawall footpath offers excellent panoramic views across the area being developed by the Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project
  • Access road between Grapnells Farmyard and car park provides views over the wild bird cover area and the developing grazing marsh
  • The wild bird cover area can also be viewed from the end of the road running 200 m to the south then east from Grapnells Farmyard. Particularly good in the winter months.

  • RADAR-accessible facilities and baby changing in Back Lane car park, Rochford, 7 miles (11 km) away.  

Catering

  • Nearest refreshments, including hot food, The Marina Bar at Essex Marina and Canewdon village, 3.5 miles (5.5 km) away, which has local shops and a pub.
