Star species
Our star species are some of the most interesting birds you may see on your visit to the reserve. |
Lapwing Watch the nesting lapwings here chasing predators that may come too close to their nests or show too much of an interest in their chicks. The protective parents regularly give chase to crows and do not stop their 'mobbing' attacks until the danger has passed. | | Little egret Now breed on the reserve. Look for their brilliant, bright-white forms on the estuary all year round. | | Redshank Redshanks nest here in good numbers. Watch their display flights over the saltmarsh and look out for the adults perched on posts, showing off their red legs. | | White-fronted goose A small flock of around 100 white-fronted geese spends winter on the saltmarsh and are generally present between late October and early April. These birds are of the orange-billed Greenland race, which winters mainly in Scotland and Ireland. | | Wood warbler Wood warblers can be seen - and more easily heard - in the woods here in spring. Follow the trails early in the morning for the best performance. | |
