Play your part in making the world richer in wildlife.
Together we must step up to save nature by 2020

Nature is in big trouble. It is in a steady, desperate global decline. One which will make our lives all the poorer, and threaten our very existence. The RSPB is determined not to let this happen. We're determined that by 2020, we will all live in a world that's richer in nature - more beautiful, healthy and inspiring - than it is today.

Save nature in the Thames Estuary

The Thames Estuary is globally recognised, and protected, because of it's vital coastal wetland for thousands of wildfowl and wading birds. The idea of an airport in the Thames Estuary has been catapulted back to prominence by the Mayor of London. However, any airport would cause immense damage to the wildlife and environment.

Help stop raptor persecution

Despite decades of full legal protection, many birds of prey continue to suffer from persecution. Vicarious liability would help by targeting the minority of landowners ultimately responsible for driving the persecution. This law has been passed in Scotland, but not in the rest of the UK. Birds like the hen harrier need this law if they are to be saved.

Be careful of nesting birds

Your gardens will be an active place with birds nesting so please keep an eye out for them and avoid trimming hedges and bushes. You can help by leaving out materials they can use for making their nests such as hay/straw and even fluff from rugs or hair from a brush!

Stepping up for Nature

Think big

2010, ironically the international year of biodiversity, was the year we failed to meet the target to halt its loss. In the same year the Comprehensive Spending Review resulted in funding for nature being cut dramatically.

But there is now a new target to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2020 - the UK Government has signed up to it and, despite having less money, we cannot afford to fail again.

The RSPB is working to restore rainforests in Africa and Asia, and to save albatrosses in the southern oceans. Here at home we have a network of over 200 nature reserves across the UK and we are working with farmers and land owners to restore vast swathes of our countryside to its former glory.

Get stuck in

But we can't do this alone. We have to work with our supporters, members of the public and businesses to make it happen. We’re calling on millions of people to Step Up for Nature and do their bit to save wildlife, however and wherever they can. Millions of personal actions will help wildlife on the ground. But together, they will represent something much bigger - a vast movement of people determined to bring the nature we love back from the brink.

Governments must step up too. The UK Government and the devolved governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales must make the right decisions for nature. The UK must do its bit to help meet the global target to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2020, and through international leadership encourage other countries to step up too.

Nature is amazing. Nature is in trouble. Let’s step up and save it - together.
