Become a campaign champion

Two women at a march, one holding a loudspeaker
As an RSPB campaigner, you can make your voice heard on issues you care about

The main aims of being an RSPB campaigner are to remind your MP or decision maker that environmental issues are important, and to urge them to take positive action.

As a constituent and a consumer, you can influence people who make some pretty big decisions. By saying the right thing the right way, you can make others take action for nature.

You'll also be inspiring your local community to take action as you'll be building support and raising awareness of our campaigns and appeals.

If you'd like to step up for nature and really make a difference, we've got two volunteer roles to choose from.

Campaign Champion

As a Campaign Champion, you will:

  • write letters or e-mails to a politician or a local paper
  • distribute campaign materials
  • use social media (such as Facebook and Twitter) to promote our campaigns
  • take an online action, such as signing a petition.

When we contact you about our campaigns, we'll send you all the necessary information, explaining the issues and the key points. We'll give you all the materials you need. We'll also include details of where to send any letters or e-mails, and tips on making them as effective as possible.

Campaign Champion Activist

In this role, we'll ask you to:

  • meet and chat to your MP, Councillor or other local decision makers to share your concerns face-to-face
  • talk about our campaigns to the media through press releases, letters and even interviews
  • attend RSPB events to promote our campaigns
  • write letters or e-mails to a politician or a local paper
  • distribute campaign materials
  • use social media (such as Facebook and Twitter) to promote our campaigns
  • take an online action, such as signing a petition.

A poll by MORI asked MPs how their constituents could most effectively influence them. Top of the list, with 56%, was visiting MPs' surgeries. Second on the list was lobbying in parliament. That's why we ask Campaign Champion Activists to do both these things, and we'll always provide you with detailed briefings so you can do your research. You will also get special training before you meet decision makers.

We're here to help you

Whatever role you decide to do, there's plenty of help on hand. Whenever we contact you about a campaign, we'll send you all the information you need to get to grips with the issue, and Campaigns Team staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. You can also contact us if you have an idea of something you think we should be acting on.

Coming to the whole of the UK soon...

Currently these roles are only available in England, but by 2012 you will be able to campaign with us in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you can't wait until then, e-mail the campaigns team at campaigns@rspb.org.uk to see what you can do for nature near you.

What can I do?

Step up for nature and become a Campaign Champion or Campaign Champion Activist. If you're interested in either role just click on the link below and give us a few details so we can send you more information and a registration form.
