Save the Sumatran rainforest |
Where is Sumatra?Sumatra lies north-west of Australia between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, straddling the Equator. It is one of the 17,508 islands that form the world's largest chain of islands, Indonesia. At twice the size of Britain, Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world. It is also the largest island entirely in Indonesia (both Borneo and New Guinea are bigger, however, they are only partially in Indonesia). The red square on the map below shows the 100,000 hectares of rainforest that the RSPB, Burung Indonesia and their partners are working to protect. You can use the controls on the map to zoom in and you can switch to satellite imagery using the Satellite button (the middle of the three on the right hand side of the map). |
