Two hundred years ago heathland extended over much of the Bedfordshire Greensand Ridge. Today, there is far too little of this habitat left in the UK, and that which remains is badly fragmented. Heathland is vital for several species of remarkable birds and other wildlife, including Dartford warblers, stonechats, nightjars, woodlarks, small copper butterflies and natterjack toads. What do we hope to achieve?The Lodge is of particular geographical importance as a vital bridge between the heaths of Hampshire and Surrey, and heathland in East Anglia. With your help, we have extended the land at The Lodge from 43 hectares (106 acres) to 180 hectares (445 acres). We are now working hard to restore 100 hectares to heathland and acid grassland. Bringing this habitat back to its former glory will take several years.
