Gardens for nature

Flower borders in front of RSPB The Lodge reserve, Bedfordshire

Many once familiar and widespread birds have suffered serious declines in recent years, which means our homes and gardens have become vital havens for wildlife. The song thrush, blackbird, starling, robin and house sparrow need our help now.

We would like you to raise funds for our vital conservation work through our Gardens for nature scheme by opening your garden and inviting your friends, family and the local community along.

What do I need to do to open my garden?

You can open you garden from May to September. Once you have decided to open your garden, you will need to register with us and decide what fundraising tools you require from our community fundraisers.

Whether you want to ask for a suggested donation on entry, organise teas and coffees, sell raffle tickets, run a tombola or organise a plant sale, we can help with useful advice and support materials. You could also sell your plants online through 'The Plant Exchange' (click on the link to the right to find out how).

Gardening advice tailored to your garden

To help you get ready for your open garden day, why not get some gardening advice through our Homes for Wildlife project?

Sign up to this exciting wildlife gardening project and we will provide you with personalised wildlife gardening advice, tailored specifically to your home and garden - the perfect way to manage a mini nature reserve on your own doorstep and to get your garden ready to open.

Homes for Wildlife is not about leaving a token wild corner in your garden. It provides practical advice to manage your whole garden as a patchwork of habitats that include borders rich in a variety of flowers, trees and shrubs and well managed lawns.

We will show you how to create features such as ponds and artificial homes for an array of wildlife and advise on other issues likely to affect wildlife, such as undertaking work on your roof.

You can sign up for Homes for Wildlife by clicking on the link to the right.
