The reserve's 433 hectares of upland heath, soggy wetland, and moorland habitats are the perfect home for many of Orkney's key breeding birds including Red-throated Divers, Hen Harriers, Merlins and Short-eared Owls. Explore the flowering willow scrub, full of insects, and rocky outcrops, called hamars, busy with nesting Fulmars. On the coast, take a moment to watch as seals haul themselves onto shore.
We’re working to maintain Trumland’s healthy mosaic of moorland habitats because it's a really special place for wildlife. We monitor numbers of breeding birds and regularly survey seabirds. We also record numbers of native mammals, like the Orkney vole and otter.
And it's not just animals that benefit from our work, we’re also protecting some pretty special plants like the Alpine Bearberry and Round-Leaved Wintergreen, by removing invasive plants like the Salmonberry and fuschia.

BBQs are a fire risk, endangering other people and the precious wildlife and habitats here. They are not permitted on the reserve at any time.
RSPB Scotland welcomes responsible access, in line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. During the ground-nesting bird breeding season (1 April to 15 August) and in areas with livestock, we would ask that you keep your dog on a short lead and clean up after them.
Assistance dogs are welcome in all parts of the reserve.
