Why we want you

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are available for one sunday a month to get stuck in with some practical conservation work at our reserve. Reserve tasks tend to be seasonal, falling into 2 types of work:

Summer/Autumn: This is a key time for visitors and school groups so we need to make sure the reserve is up to scratch! Tasks could include:
-Cleaning & painting hides
-Bench installation
-Maintaining trails,
-Clearing Ragwort from fields.
-Keeping our new predator fence clear of vegetation.

Winter/Spring: This is the time when we work on the habitats found around the reserve and maintain the productivity of the reserve for breeding birds and other wildlife. Tasks include:
-Clearing willow from areas like reedbed or near hides and islands.
-Keeping on top of the Sea Buckthorn which can be found in some corners of the reserve
-Repairing and maintaining our important stock fencing infrastructure
-Ensuring the reserve is in a good condition for the coming breeding season.

All of these tasks, and more are essential to help us manage this unique and important place for birds and people.

The skills you need

You'd need to be a good team player and happy to brave the elements outdoors during the winter months!
Lots of energy and enthusiasm!

Minimum commitment: 1st Sunday of every month. 9am to approx 4-4.30pm
Duration: Ongoing

Notes

Training, equipment and personal protective equipment will be provided where necessary.
You'd need to bring a complete change of clothing, plenty of warm and waterproof clothing, stout shoes or boots and willies, plus a packed lunch and plenty to drink.
Useful items to bring are binoculars.
You'd need to ensure that you have a valid tetanus inoculation.

We'd reimburse you for all out- of- pocket expenses, invite you to volunteer thank you events, send you copies of our bi-annual volunteer newsletter, and of course give you ongoing support in your role.
