Corporate Team Challenge: 'Good-Fellers'
Why we want you
The RSPB in partnership with United Utilities are working to enrich the habitat at Dove Stone with the aim of increasing the diversity of the wildlife here, including managing our conifer woodlands.
Non-native conifers don't support as great a diversity of wildlife as the range of mixed, native broadleaf trees that we'll re-plant areas with, but in order to re-plant broadleaf trees we first need to clear away some of the conifers.
You'll be helping us by felling small trees by hand. This will let more light onto the woodland floor, allowing a wide variety of plants to grow and benefiting a diverse range of wildlife. What do we do with the trees we thin out ? We create piles of logs and brash that will serve as a nesting places for birds, provide habitat for small mammals, encourage insects that will in turn provide food for birds as well as encourage fungi to grow.
What’s in it for you?
For you and your colleagues it will be a day out in the great outdoors doing something that will really benefit nature. Team challenges can be tiring but they're always really rewarding and usually good fun.
We're happy to share with you our knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, Dove Stone and we'll start the day with a short presentation on how we're working to help wildlife at Dove Stone.
The skills you need
No experience is necessary although you do need to be able to do physical work.
We will provide supervision and any tools or materials necessary to complete the task ( unless obtaining them is part of the challenge ! ). All necessary training, health and safety briefings and risk assessments will be provided.
You'll need to bring a packed lunch with you and we'd recommend plenty of drinking water and a flask of something hot.
You'll need to wear sturdy boots with good grip as the terrain can be steep and uneven in places and bring waterproofs or sun cream and hats just in case it's hot - you never know !
Minimum commitment: n/a
Duration: one-off days
Period: November 2012 to February 2013
Who to contact
We do not directly charge for team challenges because we recognise that through helping us you're already making a direct impact on the management work of the reserve. However, any donation towards the work of RSPB Dove Stone would be gratefully received.
Please note: this volunteering opportunity is a team day aimed at established groups - usually employees from companies and organisations. We particularly welcome interest in our team challenge conservation days from organisations in and around Oldham.
